By installing or using Locktab, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, uninstall the extension.

What Locktab does

Locktab is a browser extension that places a visual overlay on browser tabs to discourage casual access. It offers password protection, drag-to-unlock, decoy screens, and related features to help you keep tabs private from people who share your device.

What Locktab is NOT

Locktab is tamper-evident, not tamper-proof. It does not encrypt your data and does not protect against malware or sophisticated attackers with physical access to your device.

Specifically:

A user with access to Chrome's extension management page (chrome://extensions) can disable or uninstall Locktab. Disabling is visible — the extension simply disappears from the toolbar. Uninstalling wipes local settings, but Locktab records the original install date in Chrome's sync storage and shows a "Reinstalled" warning on the next use.

Locktab actively defends against DevTools-based bypass: DevTools keyboard shortcuts are blocked while locked, right-click is disabled on the overlay, and a MutationObserver re-injects the overlay if removed and logs a tamper event. These defenses are effective against most users but are not guaranteed against a highly sophisticated attacker.

Passwords are hashed with SHA-256 before storage, so plaintext passwords are never written to disk.

Do not rely on Locktab as your sole means of protecting sensitive information. For serious security needs, use operating system-level user accounts, full-disk encryption, or dedicated security software.

Your responsibilities

You are responsible for remembering your password. Locktab does not store plaintext passwords and cannot recover them for you. If you forget your password, you can uninstall and reinstall the extension to reset all settings.

You are responsible for how you use Locktab. Don't use it to lock other people out of their own devices or accounts.

No warranty

Locktab is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that the extension will be error-free, uninterrupted, or fit for any particular purpose. We are not liable for any damages arising from your use of Locktab, including but not limited to data loss, unauthorized access, or inability to access locked tabs.

Availability

We may update, modify, or discontinue Locktab at any time without notice. Chrome browser updates may also affect functionality. We are not obligated to maintain backward compatibility.

Privacy

Locktab collects no data. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms at any time. Changes take effect when posted. Continued use of Locktab after changes constitutes acceptance.
